What is Ashtvinayak Yatra?
Ashtavinayaka means “eight Ganeshas” in Sanskrit. Ganesh is the deity of unity, prosperity, and learning which removes obstacles. Visiting Ashtavinayaka describes a pilgrimage to the eight Ganesh temples in Maharashtra state of India that include eight different idols of Ganesha, sequenced in a pre-ascertained order.
The eight ancient holy temples of Ganesha which are located around the center of Pune are covered. Each of these temples has a unique legend and history of its own and is quite different from the murtis at each temple.

Siddhivinayak Temple, Siddhtek
Siddhivinayak in Siddhtek is the second temple on the Ashtavinayak route Yatra, and is only about 200 kilometers from Pune. Siddhivinayak temple is dedicated to special powers and privileges for the people. It sits on the banks of the Bhima River on Siddhatek Hill. This unique temple has a trunk on the right side, the unique idol in any temple. Rebuilt in the late 18th century, prominent festivals include Ganesh Chaturthi and Ganesh Jayanti.
Ballaleshwar Temple, Pali
Ballaleshwar Temple is in Pali. It is 28 kilometers from Roha in the Raigad district. The temple sits between the Sarasgad fort and the Amba river. The temple is eastbound and became a stone one in 1780 after its wooden structure was rebuilt. During daily worship, morning sunlight glows above the Ganesha idol. The temple has a very big bell given out after a triumph over the Portuguese. There are celebrations in months of Bhadrapada and Magha.
Shri Moreshwar Temple- Moregaon
Moreshwar Temple is the first temple of Ashtavinayak Yatra that lies 55 kilometers away from Pune, and it is well connected with the road. Located 50 feet tall, it has four entrances, the main facing north. Significantly, this temple has two larger Lamp Towers, a large sculpture of a mouse and an atypical Nandi (Bull) statue facing Lord Ganesha. The worship is held thrice in a day, with two special holidays, Ganesh Jayanti and Ganesh Chaturthi, for example.
Varadvinayak Temple, Mahad
The temple contains a self-originated idol discovered in a lake at the adjacent area in 1690. Built in 1725 by Subhedar Ramji Mahadev Biwalkar, the east-facing temple has four elephant sculptures and a ceaseless burning oil lamp since 1892. To pay one’s respects, devotees come for worship in the inner sanctum, permitted to arrive all around the world.
Mahaganpati Temple, Ranjhangaon
The most powerful form of Lord Ganesha, Mahaganpati Temple, is in the village of Ranjhan, a short distance from Pune. According to legend, the invocation of this form helped Shiva best Tripurasur the demon. The idol features ten trunks and twenty hands. The temple retains a special place in the hearts of devotees needing divine strength and blessings.
Chintamani Temple, Theur
The name, ‘Chintamani’, denotes Ganesha as an assuage for concerns. Chintamani Temple, located 25 km from Pune in the village of Theur. This Ashtavinayak-based temple is also known to be a larger one of the Ashtavinayak shrines. In addition to the central shrine of Ganesha, the temple is home to three smaller temples of Shiva, Vishnu-Lakshmi and Hanuman. One unique feature is the black stone water fountain inside the temple hall.
Vighnahar Temple, Ozar
The temple, which is on the banks of Kukadi River, is located in Maharashtra. It is about 95 km from Pune in Ozar. Vighnahar Temple is a temple surrounded by grand stone walls. Off the Pune-Nashik Highway, at the upper peak of the temple there stands gold. An east-facing idol, with its trunk to the left, is flanked by the divine beings Riddhi and Siddhi. There is a profound spiritual sanctity to it.
Girijatmaj Temple
Girijatmaj Temple is situated 97 km from Pune and lies within the Ganesh Caves on a mountain. To reach the temple, devotees must climb 307 steps. This temple is made from one stone and is facing to the south. The idol of the temple is not separate but is intricately carved into the stone wall of the cave. ’Girijatmaj’ is the word for Ganesha, the son of Girija (Parvati), emphasizing the important role played by it in the Buddhist cave complex.
